Assessment and Reporting
At Key Stage 3
In KS3 students are formally assessed twice per year. The aim of the reports is to give you feedback on how your child is performing. On the report you will see two tables. The first table shows your child’s attainment and progress in all subjects. The second table shows pastoral information on your child.
Table 1: Progress & Attainment. In this table there are eight columns, each of which are explained below:
|
Subject |
The subject your child is studying. |
|
Teacher |
The teacher of that subject. |
|
Assessment Score % |
The percentage score your child achieved on the assessment in this subject. In a subject, students may take more than one assessment, and then their scores are all taken together to calculate a percentage score. If your child did not take the assessment(s) this column will be blank, as will the percentile rank and progress columns. |
|
Percentile Rank (attainment) |
The percentage scores for all students in the subject have been put in order and each student has been given a rank from 100 (the highest score) to 1 (the lowest score). This gives you clarity on how well your child is attaining - how much subject knowledge and skill they have learned and showed in their assessment(s). |
|
Comparison (previous Percentile Rank) |
This column indicates if your child has increased (+), decreased (-) or stayed the same (=) in their percentile rank compared to their previous reported percentile rank. |
|
Progress from KS2 |
The Y7 report will show your child’s percentile rank compared to their primary school results to determine how well they are progressing. The progress column describes this progress as above expected, expected or below expected. |
|
Next step action |
These are short statements that explain what your child should do in order to improve in the subject. Every subject has a next step action as everyone can improve. |
|
Attitude to learning |
Your child’s attitude to learning in the subject is described as excellent, good, satisfactory or below expectation. |
It is worth noting that a child probably will not have the same % score, percentile rank, progress and attitude in every subject as they will perform better in some subjects than in others. It is also worth noting that within a subject a child could have
- a high % score and percentile rank but a below expected progress. This means they have achieved well but their attainment at primary school indicates they should attain even higher.
- a low % score and percentile rank but an above expected progress. This means they have not achieved a high score in the assessment but they have achieved higher than would be predicted from their attainment at primary school.
Table 2: Attendance Information.
|
Percentage attendance |
We aim for all students to have 100% attendance. The minimum expectation is 97%. The Department of Education has produced evidence about the impact of absence on grades; an attendance rate of 93% has been shown to lower the performance of students by at least 1 grade in all subjects. Take a look at your child’s performance. If they have attended less than 93%, their attendance could be affecting their progress. |
How to use the report
- Please use the report to have a meaningful discussion with your child and their teacher about their progress.
- You can use your child’s attitudes to learning to check if they are working to the best of their ability.
At Key stage 4
In KS4 students are formally assessed twice per year. These are usually full or part past papers to prepare students for their final exams in the summer of Year 11. These assessments are marked by teachers and then compared to historical national results to determine a grade. Teachers then use their knowledge of the student and the course to determine a GCSE forecast grade. This shows what we expect the student to achieve at the end of the qualification if they continue to work as they are now.
Students will receive two reports each year which shows their targets, assessment grade, and their forecast grade. A judgement is made on how well they are making progress in each subject area. This is reported as a colour.
Gold = above expected for their prior attainment, Green = at expected for their prior attainment, Amber = below expected for their prior attainment, Red = significantly below expected for their prior attainment.
In addition, the report contains information on their performance in our Thrive attitudes to learning, and information on key pastoral data (for example attendance and punctuality statistics). Crucially, in every subject they will receive next step actions. These are specific activities to do which will help move them forwards. These activities should be carried out in the weeks following a report. An example report is linked at the bottom of this page.
