Walk

Our 2025 school travel survey shows the majority of pupils (70%) choose to walk to Glossopdale School. Walking to school is convenient, flexible, cheap and a good time to chat with your mates.

Here are some of the main walking routes to school. Below the route maps, learn how to map your own route to school.

Sample routes by area

 Pupils situated in Tintwistle may also wish to view the 237 bus route to see if that is convenient for their location.

Pupils situated in Old Glossop may also wish to view the 237 bus route to see if that is convenient for their location or even the Glossop to Dinting train via journey planner.

Charlesworth/Broadbottom

Pupils from Broadbottom could also get the 341 bus or more conveniently take the train from Broadbottom to Dinting train via journey planner.

Create your own route

We would advise that you try out a walking route when you are not in a rush. You could plan the route using apps like Kamoot or you can also view OS maps for free via https://www.bing.com/maps

In the top right-hand corner, hover your mouse over the ‘Road’ button and click on ‘Ordnance survey’

At first the map won’t look any different, but one click on the ‘+’ zoom in, the map will change to the more recognisable OS format.

However, keep zooming in (press ‘+’ another 3 times) and it will drill down to the OS map where you can view the public right of ways.

Below is another map of the local area to the school with footpaths in red:

Cycle/Scoot

Riding to school on a bicycle is convenient, takes very little time and is cheap.

Bike set-up and regular checks

Each pupil needs to be sure their bike fits them. Check the set-up regularly e.g. saddle height, handlebar height and – over time – the frame size.  Do the “M check” before each bike ride, to be sure your bicycle is roadworthy. Helmets are recommended.

M Check guide

M Check video:

The entire bike is checked starting from the rear wheel and moving forwards in the shape of an ‘M’.

How does my child get Bikeability training?

Bikeability is a cycling training course designed for everyone, pupils and adults. Bikeability training is offered at the school for small groups in year 7, but more training would always be beneficial. If you want to find out more about Bikeability contact the school via theplace@glossopdaleschool.org.uk

Which are the good routes to school by bike?

What are the basics of safe cycling?

Road safety rules

  • don't jump red lights or cycle on the pavement unless it's a designated cycle path;
  • signal clearly at all times;
  • ride in a position where you can see and be seen;
  • make eye contact with other road users, especially at junctions, then you know they've seen you;
  • when riding at night always use a working white front light and red backlight, plus a red rear reflector - it's the law.

If you're cycling on paths shared by walkers, wheelchair users, and horse riders:

  • don't go too fast - it can intimidate others;
  • use your bell to let others know you are approaching, but don't assume they can hear or see you;
  • give way to others and always be prepared to slow down and stop if necessary;
  • keep left or on your side of any dividing line;
  • be careful at junctions, bends or entrances.

How do I fix my child’s bike?

Local bike shops offer bike maintenance and sell parts such as High Peak Cycles in Glossop town centre. Manchester Bike Kitchen in Hyde offers bike maintenance classes and also sells second hand bikes.

Glossop bike repair and service runs a bicycle repair shop, held weekly at Hadfield Methodist Church on Saturday mornings. This is a Glossop Bureau initiative in collaboration with Glossopdale School.

What’s the best way to lock up a bicycle?

Always lock your bike up in the bike sheds next to the school. When you lock your bike up always use a good D-Lock and lock your bike to an immovable object.

What about the weather?

Get the right gear and it will make a big difference.

Scoot

Another way to ride to school is on a scooter. Just as with bicycles a scooter needs to be used sensibly. The advice for cycling also applies here. For information, E-scooters are not legal to use in Glossop.

Other bus routes

Pupils situated in Charlesworth may want to get the 341 bus to Gamesley and walk the rest of the way - Traveline suggests this journey would take 30 min in total. Pupils from Broadbottom could also get the 341 bus or more conveniently take the train from Broadbottom to Dinting train via journey planner.

Car

Safety

The safety of all pupils is our number one priority at all times. We ask all drivers to keep their speed low when dropping off or collecting pupils. Please do not park on pavements around the school.

Traffic congestion affects everyone. We recognise some pupils need to travel by car. However, we hope you can consider walking, cycling or public transport, even if it is only one day a week.

Car Sharing

Car sharing is a great way to reduce the numbers of cars around the school at any one time and saves money.

5-minute walking bubble

Dropping off immediately outside the school is to be avoided unless your child experiences mobility difficulties. As shown below in the 5 minutes’ walk bubble around the school, where possible park 5 minutes away and let pupils walk into school for the rest of their journey.

Transport assistance

Transport assistance may be available from Derbyshire County Council should you meet various criteria, please see further details on the website: https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/education/schools/your-child-at-school/travel/school-transport.aspx
